Evacuees all had to undergo health checks either before they left home, or on arrival in Cornwall. Minor diseases such as scabies were common and cramped conditions encouraged the spread of illness. Sick children were accommodated in sick bays until they were well enough to be placed in a foster home. The interview clips reveal that this was a very frightening experience for many children.
